Ah yat seafood at Turf City

December 27, 2007 · Leave a Comment

At the ulu Turf City, i found a burstling seafood ‘aquarium’ market called Unique Seafood Market. not ur typical market, but e specialty is u choose the live seafood u see in the tanks alive, and u decide how dey are to be cooked, and the restaurants nearby will cook them at no additional cost. I hope i din seems to complicate e process.  The seafood here are gd and some cheap cheap. On weekdays, u get them at 1/2 price for some items like, fish, crabs or even scallop(not today though).

Had e seafood cooked at Ah yat seafood restaurant.  Here are the reviews.

scallop with garlic
Scallop with garlic: not worth the price(pretty ex), not sweet enuff..

steamed seabass (canto style)
Steamed seabass canto style: nice and cheap(abt $1plus for 100gm).. yummy and gd gd

cheese water prawns
Cheese baked water prawns: not too big but got the lobster kinda taste. Wld be nicer w/o mayo.

crabs
Crabs in 2 styles: On the foreground is chilli crab. Not too impressive.. so nothin much
At the back, salted egg crab. Yum yum… pretty gd, but my fren say got a better version next door. Shall try next time

Brotzeit German Bier Bar & Restaurant

November 16, 2007 · Leave a Comment

Haven been blogging lately anywhere. But i still wanna drop this post to recommend this place to any1 reading it. It’s Brotzeit!!
I totally love this place despite that i’m not really a beer or sausage lover. But u juz can’t help loving german bier and their wurst… :P

brotzeit bier

flavoured biers – they taste really gd. At 1st we were skeptical abt mixed beers. But we were wrong. For 2 non beer lover, we totally fell in love wif it. U get the taste of the beer, yet the taste of the mango juice or sprite totally complemented it.

brotzeit currywurst
Currywurst with wedges – The Berliners/Germans love it. Me too. lol. For those who had no idea what currywurst taste like, imagine curry powder+lotsa ketchup on top of a sausage.. Yum.. yum… Plus the wedges it dones superbly well. It’s crispy on the outside, soft and warm on the inside. I am salivating soon… *gurp*

This is a nice place to chill after work or on wkends. Situated at the waterfront portion of Vivo city, juz another cool place to whine down the numerous days of work.. hahhahaha

Le bistrot

September 24, 2007 · Leave a Comment

baby brought me there for my bday. ;)
In my opinion, this bistro serves fine french cuisine in the mindset of a typical singaporean appetite(or maybe mentality). A typical french meal is usually petit and not soo filling(can check out my post on La Petit Cuisine). But food served here has really big portion. Too filling for a gal or even a guy. It’s like serving for the NS guys. Despite the huge quantity, quality wasn’t spared. I still managed to savour gd stuff out it. The ambience was great, but i wished i’ve a table inside instead. Will probably be more romantic. lol.. k la, better get back to the food. Anyway, baby and i had the set of main+dessert which cost $38. U get to choose a range of items frm each segment of the menu. U oso get the option to haf entrée+main at the same price. Those wif a big big appetite, top up $10 and u’ll get the full 3 course meal.

Mains
pan fried salmon fillet
Pan roasted salmon fillet – baby had this. It’s also pretty filling to baby’s surprise. Cos he didn’t expect juz dat fillet is sooo filling. plus the ratatouille… (not the rat movie arh..) By now, u shld noe it’s a stew dish. hee…
duck leg confit
Duck leg confit – It’s ultra filling. Normally u get 1 duck leg onli… But here u get 2 plus mash. I was almost full after finishing them. The duck was pretty tender and succulent. Still i kinda preferred the white dog’s version.

Desserts

tarte au chocolat
Tarte au chocolat – the chocolat is really gd dat i managed to finished it after having the filling main. Paired with the lemon custard, the whole dessert had a refreshing taste, not too sweet or bitter. Everything’s nice except i wished the portion is smaller.
nougat glace
Nougat Glacé – baby’s dessert. Is a parfait wif the nougattie taste. I like the candied orange skin on top paired wif the ice cream… nice nice.

Will definately go back for more yummy stuff, esp their desserts. But i guess i’ll go with an empty stomach next time, so dat i can savour the food well. hee..

La Petit Cuisine

September 12, 2007 · Leave a Comment

I visited there after reading the sunday times lifestyle review. It’s really a small corner with less than 15 tables. Was expecting to haf coq au vin, but dey either sold out or wasn’t available dat day. So tried their duck confit while baby tried their stirloin steak. It’s erm…… read below for the comments ba… Hint: the nearby Island creamey satisfy me more than here.

stirloin steak
Stirloin steak – It was tender and it smell really gd(even a non beefer like me oso tempted to try). But portion was too petit and w/o sauce, baby lament it as unsatisfying…

duck confit
Duck Confit – disappointing. U see the picture in wine and dine’s review u’ll see wat i mean.
It only kept reminding me how nice was the 1 i had at white dog(sth is wrong.. white dog is not even a proper french stall). I guess it’s either the cook was in a hurry to serve or lack of QC. If u dun see wat’s wrong,  let me explain ba. The skin is not dat crispy(dun even say crispier) and fats still stuck on the skin(definately show duck got cook wif its fat but not cooked long enuff ba)

Forgotten to mention abt their bread wif butter b4 meal. The bread was nice and warm. Totally reminds me of the breads i had in Europe cafes and bistros. Guess it’s the onli thing i like dere le.

The French Stall

September 12, 2007 · Leave a Comment

Haf a tinge of french casually.. That’s what i did at The French Stall. Somewhere near Farrer Park (or rather the end of little India), The French Stall is a standout bistro which serves sum pretty decent french cuisine at a pretty heartlander price. What i like abt it: The tinge of frenchness in the decor and food. What i dun like abt it: Too frills free. But den again u pay peanuts, of cos u get peanuts la. So can’t complain much.

mozarella appetizer
Mozarella salad with vinegratte dressing – Entree and Our 1st taste of french cuisine.. it’s the impression we normally get, small and presentable. I love mozarella and how it blends wif the vinegratte and tomatoes. Wish the portion will be bigger. :(

duck a l'orange
Duck a l’orange – Duck serve in orange sauce with risotto. I find the duck a bit too crispy and dry. Wld haf been better if the meat is moist. Risotto is fillin, kinda complete the meal.

pork loin cordon bleu
Pork loin cordon bleu – Pork loin with cheese and bacon stuffed in it. A nice combi and the pork is nice and blends well with the cream sauce. But the stuffings didn’t blend so well.

chocolate cake with ice cream
Chocolate cake with vanilla ice cream – It’s the only dish that cld probably bring me back dere again. The chocolate cake was rich and moist. The ice cream can be do w/o but w it, the cake taste juz as gd too. Wld definately be back for this dessert.

Asian Kitchen

August 30, 2007 · Leave a Comment

This place is a melting pot of the foreign flavours we see.. oops it’s taste in the recent yrs. There’s chinese
pork chop ramen
Pork chop ramen – Smells gd(esp the pork chop), tastes not bad.
prawn wonton ramen
Prawn wonton ramen – It’s nice according to sum1 who hadn’t smell/maybe eaten anything chinese for quite sum time.

There’s vietnamese

pho bo
Pho bo – U see this every where in Vietnam and it does taste sum wat like u see every where in Vietnam, according to sum1 who has eaten pho bo for 1 wk in Vietnam.

beef stew beef stew close up

Beef stew – Everything is rite abt the stew. U wun haf the sense of fatigue when eating dis stew, thanks to the tinge of spiciness from the chilli oil.

There’s fusion

pineapple duck laksa
Pineapple duck laksa – i’ve  neva eaten duck laksa. It tasted more like curry than laksa(maybe is the lack of assam) The duck was nice, but the pineapple didn’t help much with the taste. I guess their attempt of using pineapple to simulate the assam taste fail ba.

Japanese Desserts

August 29, 2007 · 2 Comments

I shall follow up frm my nectarie post with dis abt japanese desserts. I think besides the usual cakes and ice cream, i’ll frequent jap restaurants for their desserts. Not a lot, probably juz dis 3: Shimbashi Soba, Azabu Sabo and Sun with Moon Japanese Dining & Café

Shimbashi Soba
The best time to haf their desserts is btw 2.30 to 5.30. A dessert and tea cost $5+++. A true bargain and a nice place to haf afternoon tea after a whole day of shopping. The usual average price does not differ much anyway, abt $8 w/o tea.
Soba Abekawa
Soba Abekawa – consists of 3 toppings. The red beanand matcha powder was not bad. I was a bit disappointed with the soya powder. It didn’t really blend with the soba dango.
anmitsu with vanilla ice cream
Anmitsu with vanilla ice cream – I love anmitsu, for the variety of items. But this 1 seems to lack sum taste. Maybe it’s the health factor ba, i find the syrup was a bit bland.

Azabu Sabo
The only outlet in Sg managed by the main company and not franchaise. U juz can’t help to be enchanted by their galore of dessert displays. I’ll only go for their desserts. Tried their parfait b4, nice!.. But the 1s u gonna see are not dem. Sorry to disappoint. hee…
zenzai
Zenzai with green tea ice cream – ignore the look. he’s juz sad dat the portion is small. But the taste is heavenly. Everything blends well. The red bean paste taste juz nice.
imperial red bean soup
Imperial style red bean soup – i like the seaweed complement. But maybe i prefer sum beans inside. Shld haf chosen country style 1. But the soup is nice. Guess dey really use top grade red beans. U can check out pics from their menu here

Sun with Moon Japanese Dining & Café
I love their menu a lot cos what u see is what u get. Enuff said. Shall post the pics.
wafer wif red and green bean paste
Japanese wafer with green and red bean paste+ice cream – yum… but can be better. The sauce as a complementary dip be better than decor.
tofu cheesecake
Tofu cheesecake – nice decor and appealing to cheesecake lovers. Not me though. So can’t comment much.
sweetbox
Sweetbox – the contents will change every day. So do ask before u order. Like for this one, i tot it was alright. Didn’t really appeal to me much. Was amazed with the sweetbox i had the 1st time.

Dat’s all abt japanese desserts. Well i’m still an amateur. So pardon my description.Next time will try more stuff 1.. hee..

Nectarie

August 28, 2007 · Leave a Comment

I love desserts. I love the way they are decorated, presented. I love those that look so sweet, but taste juz nice. A nice cup of tea/coffee will be a great complement.

The Nectarie is at the midst of popular nightspot, Clark Quay. For those who wan to indulge in the nightlife but not the booze, Nectarie is the place. The waffle is gd. I can’t help but say it’s better than my all time fav from gelare. Oops…

waffle with lavender honey ice cream
Waffle with lavender honey ice cream – waffle is very gd(yum yum).. lavender honey ice cream is 1 of their house specialty. I love places with unique recipes. Can’t wait to try other flavours. As for this ice cream, it really taste like lavender(my fren actually felt like he is eating lavender soup.. hahaha) with a tinge of honey. Unfortunately, these 2 gd stuff dun really blend tgt. How nice if it do.
strawberry shortcake
Strawberry shortcake – U will love it except for the base. I tink the base didn’t really contribute much to the cake(kinda pity it). I wish they could find sth to merge it with the overall cake to contribute to the taste. Else it’s a waste of ingredients.
choc dome
Milk Amaretto Chocolate Gateaux(aka choc dome) – The disappointment for the day. I think it wld be better the outer layer choc is harden instead of being a softy. Maybe it’s hard to do ba. The mousse can be better wif more cocoa or another tinge of liquor.
berry tea
Berry Tea – the only drink i like ba. Their coffee wasn’t really gd. The carrot juice was ok.
So i wld recommend trying their flavoured tea. :)

Say Cheezecake

August 28, 2007 · Leave a Comment

no.. i’m not goin to tok abt their cheesecake. One of the latest outlets in GWC, i find the decor of the place pretty swanky. They haf a open kitchen concepts and cozy round sofa seats. But the specialty abt dis restaurant is not their decor or cheesecakes. It’s their unique recipe items. And i love that they offer set dinners at quite affordable prices(btw 18.80+ to less than 30) Each set consists of a drink, starter and main. You get to savour a taste of their unique dishes like wacky rambutan or Coffee-Flavoured Baby Pork Ribs at affordable range. :)

But for the dishes, i feel that presentation outshine more than the taste. The unique and quirky dishes are a plus, but i guess taste matter a lot too. Seems to be lacking of sth. Oh well, i’m not exactly the foodie expert, so shall leave it to u guys to decide.
coffee ribs
Coffee-Flavoured Baby Pork Ribs – there’s coffee taste, ribs r quite ok, not exactly tender.

tomato bisque
Tomato bisque(or was it cheesey tomato bisque) – decent
seafood basket
Seafood basket(forgotten the exact name) – i like the cheesestick but still prefer swissbake 1.

White Dog Cafe cont.

August 16, 2007 · Leave a Comment

When i mention white dog to ppl, usually i’ll recommend this dish.
No doubt it’s not from the lunch menu, but i tink it totally worth the value. At $19(excl GST+ svc charge) it’s worth it. :)

duck confit
It’s the 1st time i’ve eaten duck dat is sooo succulent wif a crisp touch. The potatoes and salad totally works well with the duck. The duck is sooo soft dat u can juz tear it apart so easily. I can’t help but say gd gd… very gd. I can’t help imagine wat will a duck wif certificate will taste like. I wish i’ll haf a chance to eat it in the future. Well.. dat’s when i’ve the $$ i guess. I can’t even afford a meal in les amis.

Pastas at White Dog

The lunch menu offers a variety of spaghettis and pastas. They are decent. Forgotten their names. Do give it a try, cos they haf exotic oriental flavours like with teriyaki sauce etc. The photos b4 are wat my frens haf tried.

awww… yh wants a bite too.

but i guess her cream based linguine satisfys her too.

That’s all abt white dog cafe. I wonder when will be my next time down dere. Do give it a try when u r in vivo city. Cos the cafe juz offers a great view of the construction at sentosa(oops.. i mean the future IR). And u can see mr big nose too.
